Dick Devos and the FAA

The Federal Aviation Administration has been announcing numerous policy updates this year, as well as some significant changes at different airports. This includes the new $40.9 million for the new tower at GSO. There are also new changes for several other airports, including security and technology regulations. All of these changes come after the FAA has been working with its Management Advisory Council to get advice on what’s best for future growth, policies, and regulations.

The Management Advisory Council was started in response to President Trump’s allegations that the FAA wasn’t doing enough to keep America competitive against foreign markets, particularly when it came to airport technology and security. The president’s challenge grew into a cause for the agency, which has now been making several policy updates.

The council nominated Dick Devos in September 2017. A business leader and former CEO of Amway, Dick Devos has been working with airports for some time. In particular, he has become the business partner of the now successful Gerald R. Ford International Airport. The airport had went through a period of stagnant growth in the 1990s, but that all changed after Devos joined the airport in expanding in the early 2000s.

At the time, Devos was still working with Amway. He had made a few connections where he was able to call up the CEO of AirTran Airways personally. He talked to the CEO about the opportunities at the airport and asked if he would be willing to add on new destinations. The AirTran Airways CEO agreed and made significant changes to the flights at the Grand Rapids location. He opened up flights to Las Vegas, Orlando, Denver, and St. Louis.

While many have wondered how Devos fits into the FAA, others have always known that he has a passion for aviation. He got his first pilot license when he was young and now has licenses for jets and helicopters of all kinds. He also co-founded the West Michigan Aviation Academy. This is a school where students are trained to become pilots on the grounds of the Gerald R. Ford International Airport. The school has received a lot of praise for its success.

Now that Devos is working with the FAA. He will also be discussing policies and regulations with other members of the council. These include former transportation authorities as well as retired airline executives. They all have a unique voice for the FAA which will be updating its policies through 2020.

Devos has experience with changing the face of an airport. He helped Gerald R. Ford International Airport become a multimillion dollar airport property in just a matter of a decade. He also helped to expand it with a $45 million renovation project that will be completed in 2018.

These experiences and so much more make Devos the perfect nomination for the FAA’s new council. The Management Advisory Council meets every quarter to discuss their ideas with the agency.
